Become a Fireman & Oiler



  Overview

The City of Springfield is currently accepting applications for Fireman & Oiler (Apprentice 1st Year), with City Water, Light & Power. The deadline to apply is Friday, June 30 at 11:00 p.m. (CST).


   Information Sessions

Learn more about becoming a Fireman & Oiler by attending one of the following information sessions:
  • Saturday, June 10 at 9:00 a.m.
  • Thursday, June 15 at 5:00 p.m.

Both sessions will take place in the City of Springfield Council Chambers, 300 S. 7th Street, 3rd Floor. Check-in begins 30 minutes prior to the session beginning. To reserve your spot, call 217.789.2446 or email humanresources@springfield.il.us with your name and the date you plan on attending.

  Qualifications

  • Age 18 years or older by the written exam
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Experience preferred but not required in an industrial facility or in the operation of heavy equipment
  • No felony convictions

  Salary & Benefits*

Hourly rate based on 40-hour work week
  • 1st Year Apprentice - $19 an hour
  • 2nd Year Apprentice - $20 an hour
  • 3rd Year Apprentice - $21 an hour
  • 4th Year Apprentice - $22 an hour
Upon successful completion of the apprenticeship, there is the potential of earning between $26 - $32 an hour, based on advancement.

  Process

  • Candidate Application Submitted Online – By June 30, 11:00 p.m. (CST)
  • Apprenticeship Exam – July 24-27
  • Oral Interviews – August 14-18
  • Background Check
  • Medical Exam, Drug Screening, Functional Capacity

  Hiring Requirements

  • Valid Illinois driver’s license at time of hire
  • Must obtain an Illinois commercial driver’s license (CDL) within the first six months of employment
