THE SPRINGFIELD FIRE DEPARTMENT OFFERS TURKEY FRYER SAFETY TIPS

It’s that time of year when many people just want to relax and enjoy their family and friends, and maybe a good football game. Sadly, it’s also the time when cooking fires dramatically increase and ruin the good time for everyone. According to the United States Fire Administration, Thanksgiving Day has more than double the number of residential cooking fires than an average day. Careless cooking activities are typically responsible for cooking fires.

The Springfield Fire Department reports that cooking fires in the kitchen can be reduced by keeping the cooking area clean and paying close attention. Leaving the cooking area, or even a momentary distraction, can cause a fire. But when it comes to turkey frying, simple mistakes can be deadly. In fact, many fire agencies discourage outdoor turkey fryer use because of the increased risk. But those who intend to use one anyway should take extra care to be safe.

HERE ARE 5 REMINDERS FOR TURKEY FRYER SAFETY.

Avoid oil spillover fires- don’t overfill the pot. To avoid having too much oil, place the turkey in the pot, fill the pot to the manufacturer’s recommended level using water, remove the turkey, then measure or mark the level of the water- this will be the level of oil needed for frying. Finally, empty all water and dry thoroughly before adding oil.

Turn off the flame while lowering the turkey into the oil. Lower the turkey slowly so as to avoid splashing or excessive bubbling.

Fry outside and away from the house, or anything else. And, NEVER leave the fryer unattended. Wind can greatly affect fire and heat. Rain or snow can cause flash fires. Children, pets, or even unwary adults can tip the fryer with disastrous and deadly results. So NEVER put the fryer near a garage, porch, or deck.

Properly thaw the turkey before frying. Ice and hot oil react violently.

Keep a class B dry chemical extinguisher nearby- NEVER use water on a grease or oil fire. Most home fire extinguishers are multipurpose dry chemical extinguishers. These are suitable for most types of fires, including hot oil fires. To use the extinguisher remember PASS - Pull the pin, Aim at the base of the fire, Squeeze the lever, and Sweep from side to side.

If visual reminders seem to stay with you better, then State Farm, William Shatner, and YouTube are here to help. Please take a moment to watch these videos. Hopefully they will help you remember to cook safely and protect yourself and those you love.
