The City Residential Tree
Program is a cost share program
where the
Office of Public Works will
supply and plant a tree in the
public right of way or parkway
area of a property,
while the property owner
contributes a small fee to the
cost. The program is open
to any resident of the City of
Springfield
and is announced each year that
it is made available.
Due to the limited number
of trees available,
a maximum of
two trees per resident
is allowed. All shade
trees are required to have at
least 35 feet of spacing and
ornamental trees are to have 20
feet of spacing. No shade tree
varieties are allowed to be
planted under overhead utility
lines.
Residents that have
narrow parkways, which are less
than five feet or where
underground utility lines would
prohibit planting, can now have
trees planted on private
property, within five feet
behind the sidewalk. Residents
will be required to sign a
release form if the tree is
planted on private property.
Limited varieties of the
following trees will be
available: Autumn Blaze Maple,
Red Sunset Red Maple, Redmund
Linden, Swamp White Oak, Red
Oak, Snow Drift Crab, Prairie
Fire Crab and Red Jewel Crab.
For
those individuals who wish to
plant trees on their property,
the City Arborist has developed
a list of recommended varieties
that are hardy enough for our
climate and provide color and/or
shade as needed. For a
