Mayor Tim Davlin today
announced that City Water, Light and Power and Land of Lincoln Goodwill
Industries will jointly participate in the “Hand Up” program which will offer
CWLP delinquent customers an opportunity to earn money toward the payment of
their utility bills.
“This program can be
described as a ‘win-win’ situation for CWLP customers and Goodwill,” Davlin
said. “We are excited about our partnership with Goodwill.”
“The program was
proposed by Goodwill Director Sharon Durbin,” Davlin said, “and we want to thank her
for bringing it to the City and CWLP”.
This is the second
time in recent years that Goodwill and CWLP have teamed up in this type of
partnership. Just over 421 CWLP customers received help with their utility bills
in a similar program.
“One impressive thing
about CWLP staff members is the willingness to help customers ‘to keep the
lights on’ “, Durbin said.
“It is our hope here
at Goodwill, to secure more funding to support this great effort,” she added.
“What a great
partnership,” Durbin said, “helping people help themselves with a hand up out of
a financial crisis.”
CWLP customers will be
paid $8 an hour and also sign a contract with Goodwill to complete the number of
hours they agree to fulfill. If the customer fulfills the terms of the contract
with Goodwill, then CWLP will receive a direct payment from Goodwill to be
applied to the customer’s account. If the customer fails to fulfill the
contract, the customer will not be eligible to receive any assistance.
Customers who work at
Goodwill to help pay their delinquent bill will still be responsible for any
remainder of the delinquent amount. Customers may work out a payment arrangement
with CWLP for the remaining delinquent amount. The payment arrangements will
depend on the individual customer’s past payment records.
“We were pleased that
the City Council approved the program and we look forward to working with
Goodwill,” said CWLP General Manager Todd Renfrow.
“Once the customer signs to
participate in the program,” Renfrow said, “his or her account will not be in
jeopardy of disconnection.”
Customers who need or
want more information about the program, Renfrow added, should contact CWLP
Customer Service at 789-2030.
