1908 - 2008
A
tragic series of events in Springfield's history
in 1908 led to the
founding of the National Association for the
Advancement of Colored People (NAACP)
the following year.
"In the one
hundred years since the riot occurred, the
historical record has been clouded, reshaped,
denied, or forgotten."
"Within hours of a reported rape of a White woman
by a Black man, a mob of thousands took control
of Springfield. In the violence that held sway
in the city for two days, two Black men were
lynched, four White men were killed, scores of
people were injured, and extensive property was
damaged before 4000 state militiamen intervened."

The City of
Springfield is in the midst of a series of
events to appropriately remember and commemorate
those activities and events that occurred a
century ago. Through citizen participation
in such events as those listed below, the
community can become better informed about its
history, and provide forums whereby new
generations of Springfieldians can better
appreciate the lives of their ancestors, and
renew their determination that such events never
happen again.
