Over 250 bicycles are recovered by the
Springfield Police Department each year.
Most of the owners are never identified.
Most bicycles are stolen from the
home (yard, garage, porch, etc.).
For every motor vehicle stolen in
the United States, three bicycles
are stolen. While 66% of
stolen motor vehicles are recovered,
less than 20% of stolen bicycles are
returned.
Bicycles are normally stolen for one
of four reasons:
For the thief's personal use
As a temporary means of
transportation
So the bicycle or its parts
can be sold for money
For some personal reason to
deny the owner of its use |
Annually the City of Springfield
gives away 95% of the bicycles
recovered by officers on patrol
because the owner of those bicycles
cannot be identified. although
many needy children benefit from
such programs we would rather return
the bicycles to their rightful
owners. |
