Built in 1903, the Camp Lincoln Commissary Building, or
“The Castle” as it is commonly referred to, is the
oldest permanent building remaining on the grounds of
Camp Lincoln. Currently used by the Illinois National
Guard, Camp Lincoln was established in 1886 as a
training center for the Illinois State Militia. The
Commissary Building is the only building remaining with
a direct association to the early history of the State
Militia and Camp Lincoln. It has been used as a
hospital, barracks, quartermaster storage, headquarters,
and during World War I, it served as a physical
examination center. Currently used for storage, plans
call for it to be turned into a military museum. Built
by Culver Stone Company, the Commissary Building is
comprised of rusticated limestone. Use of corner
turrets, buttresses, and cornice, along with smooth
dressed limestone stringcourses that separate the
foundation, first and second stories suggest a
castellated fortress.
