The building at
121 South 5th Street was build for
Chatterton’s Jewelry Store in 1853. The building is
significant under Springfield’s Landmark Designation
Standards due to the fact that it is a mid 19th
century example of eclectic styles of architecture
used in the commercial development of the Springfield
Business District in this era.
The
original building was a one story and frame. According
to Paul Angle’s, Here I Have Lived, A History of
Lincoln’s Springfield 1821-1865. The Chatterton’s
Jewelry store occupied the building from 1853-1898.
