The work of one of
Illinois’ most important early architects, John M . Van
Osdel (1811-1891), Illinois’ Executive Mansion was first
occupied by Governor Joel A.Matteson in 1855. The three
story, brick Italianate structure has been the site of
many important social events, including receptions for
seven U. S. presidents. Abraham Lincoln was a welcome
visitor during the administration of Governor William
Bissell. The Mansion is the only governor’s residence
which
Illinois has built specifically to house the first
family.
