A Call To Action: Plant Trees Today!

Thousands of trees on public and private property were destroyed in 2006 by tornado and ice storm damage. Trees not only add beauty to our neighborhoods, but also provide valuable environmental benefits for our city:

  • Trees absorb carbon dioxide from the air and fight global warming
  • Trees placed around properties reduce heating  usage by 20 to 50 percent
  • Trees placed around properties can reduce air conditioning needs by 30 percent
  • The planting of trees means improved water quality, resulting in less runoff and erosion.

Trees also add great economic opportunities:

  • Landscaping, especially with trees, can increase property values as much as 20 percent
  • Trees can be a stimulus to economic development, attracting new business and tourism
  • Commercial retail areas with trees are more attractive to shoppers
  • Apartments with trees rent more quickly
  • Properties in a wooded setting are more valuable to sell or rent
