In response to the extremely hot weather predicted for this week, Mayor J. Michael Houston has announced the availability of city facilities for use as cooling centers for citizens who might not otherwise be able to find relief from the heat.

Municipal Center West is open until 4:30 every day, Lincoln Library is open its normal hours (10 - 8 Mon - Weds, 10 - 6 Thurs - Fri, 10-5 Sat), and Municipal Center East is open 24 hours a day. These facilities are available for individuals to get in out of the midday heat and get a drink of cold water.

“This is an important time for us to also check on our elderly parents, relatives, neighbors and friends so that we can provide whatever assistance they might require,” Mayor Houston said. “We must see that appropriate steps are taken to prevent heat related illnesses.”

The following steps should be taken so as to not become victims of the heat. Some tips include:

Increase fluid and water intake but avoid alcoholic beverages and caffeine.

Take time for a cooling off period each day during very hot weather.

Use a fan to improve ventilation in rooms with open windows or doors. (The re-circulation of hot indoor air is not helpful.)

    Eat moderately.

Wear clothing that is loose fitting and light in color.

Avoid exposure to direct sunlight as much as possible.

Don’t forget your pets during hot weather. Tips for helping your pet survive include:

Do not leave your pet alone in your car -- vehicles heat quickly in the sun, and animals left in them can succumb to heat stroke in a very short time.

To prevent him from overheating, don't let your dog exercise in hot weather. If you want to run with your dog, do it in the cool hours of the early morning or late evening.

Dogs and cats need a cool, shady place to sleep during hot weather, as well as plenty of clean, fresh water, accessible at all times.

Feed your dog or cat in the cooler hours of the day.
