Mayor J. Michael Houston today reminded those interested in becoming firefighters that
they have until June 9th to obtain, fill out and return their applications to the Department of
Human Resources.
“We have already held practice sessions, and have one more scheduled for this week,”
said Mayor Houston. “These practice examinations are designed to better prepare the candidates
for the actual tests, which will be held in June. We want to be sure that everyone who wishes to
apply will have the opportunity to do so and have the opportunity to know exactly what will be
required of them.”
An orientation and practice written exam will take place at 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 26th
at the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 965 at 3520 E. Cook Street. The actual
written exam will be held on Saturday, June 18, 2011, at 9:30 a.m. at the Prairie Capital
Convention Center, 1 Convention Center Plaza, Springfield, Illinois 62701.
Packet information is available on the City’s Website and from the Office of Human
Resources in Municipal Center West. The deadline to obtain and return packets is June 9, 2011.
All applications must be hand delivered by the applicant to the Office of Human Resources,
300 S. 7th Street, Room 309, Springfield, IL 62701, before 5:00 p.m. on June 9, 2011.
Applications may be returned by certified mail or special carrier for those applicants who
live out of state or have an unreasonable driving distance from Springfield. Those applications
must be received no later than June 9, 2011. The City is not responsible for lost applications.
Applicants must provide the following data at the time of application:
- Completed application
- A copy of applicant's Birth Certificate or Birth Record
- A copy of either the applicant's High School Diploma, GED (General Education
Diploma) or Official High School Transcripts that show a graduation date in a sealed
envelope from the school. In lieu of a high school transcript you may submit your
Associates or Bachelor’s Degree Certificate.
- Copy of Veterans Military Release Form DD-214 (if applicable)
Minimum Application Requirements:

Minimum age is 20 years old on the date of the written examination. (born on or
before June 18, 1991)

Maximum age is 34 years old (unless applicant meets one of the exemptions listed
under 65 ILCS 5/10-2.1.6) on the date of the written examination (born on after June
18, 1976)

Birth Certificate

High School Diploma, GED (General Education Diploma), or Official High School
Transcript that shows a graduation date in a sealed envelope

Valid driver’s license and must be able to obtain an Illinois Drivers License

Vision correctable to 20/20 with no color blindness
