Mayor J. Michael Houston said today that incoming Public Works Director Mark Mahoney
will receive the same salary that is now being paid to Mike Norris.
“I was keenly interested in bringing Mark Mahoney on board because of his genuine interest
in improving our neighborhoods, his desire to address our seriously deteriorating infrastructure, and
his leadership in working with these issues,” Mayor Houston said. “It was my intention to make an
offer that would be attractive enough to entice Mark to leave his present position and join my team.
When he indicated that he currently made more than the position paid, I saw no problem matching
it. At no time did he suggest or ask that I match his current state salary. It is something that I did.”
“Subsequently, Mark has agreed that the salary that the outgoing Public Works director is
now receiving is appropriate for him as well.”
“Mark has been the champion for the need to deal with our street, sidewalk and sewer
problems since his election as alderman in 2003. He represented Ward 6 which is an older area of
town with severe street, sidewalk and sewer problems. He has met with his constituents almost on a
daily basis for the last eight years dealing with these problems. He and I are in total agreement as to
how we can improve the delivery of services in the Public Works Department.”
“His work as clerk of the Illinois House of Representatives demonstrates his ability as an
administrator to both head a large staff and deal with a broad spectrum of elected officials.”
“It has always been my intention to assemble a management team made up of individuals
who have a true desire to make our city better, and who will utilize the city’s resources creatively
and efficiently to make that happen. I am firmly convinced that Mark Mahoney will be a valuable
member of that team,” Houston added.
