Mayor J. Michael Houston has announced that a well known expert and leader in religious
studies will be the keynote speaker at the 16th annual Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast. Dr. Keri Day, a
Springfield native, is an Assistant Professor of Social Ethics and Director of Black Church Studies at Brite Divinity School at Texas Christian University. The Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast will be held at
7:30- a.m. on Monday, November 14, 2011 at the Springfield Hilton.
“We are excited that Dr. Day has agreed to join us for this annual event,” Mayor Houston
said. “She is well known for her background in religious studies, especially as it pertains to the
African American community. Her vita includes significant work that deals with grass roots
minority involvement in religion and the civil rights movement.”
Dr. Day received her B. S. In Political Science with a minor in Economics; earned an M. A.
In Religion and Ethics from Yale University, and received her Ph. D. In Religion from Vanderbilt
University. Dr. Day is a sought after national speaker, having keynoted for a number of
organizations such as the American Academy of religion, the Society of Christian Ethics, the historic
“Middle Passage Conversations” Conference at Yale University, The Church of God in Christ, Inc.
2009 National Education Luncheon, and more.
Dr. Day is also a researcher and writer who focuses on issues related to American poverty
and how faith communities can respond to such social problems. Her work has been published in a
number of nationally regarded journals such as Princeton Theological Review Journal, The
International Journal of Black Theology and Faith, and The Journal of Race and Ethnicity.
The Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast will be held at 7:30 a.m. on Monday, November 14, 2011 at
the Springfield Hilton. Tickets are $20 each or $200 for a table of ten. Tickets may be obtained by
