In an effort to remember the events that occurred ten years ago and to honor those who lost
their lives because of it, Mayor J. Michael Houston is today reminding Springfield residents to fly
their flags on Sunday, September 11, 2011.
“I have already directed city staff to lower flags on city properties to half staff on Sunday,”
said Mayor Houston. “The President has again proclaimed September 11th as Patriot’s Day in the
United States. Just as he has ordered flags lowered on federal buildings, we will also lower them at
City buildings and facilities.”
“September 11, 2001 was a day that no one should forget. It has changed the course of our
country and altered the lives of all of us. The loss of life on that day greatly saddened us all. But, at
the same time, the events in New York, Washington and a field in Pennsylvania have caused us to
strengthen our resolve to never forget and to never allow something as heinous as that to happen
again.”
“I urge each and every one of you to remember September 11, 2001 in your own special
way, either privately or by participating in any of the many activities that will be occurring this
weekend,” Houston added.
One such event will be a special 911 commemorative concert performed by the Springfield
Municipal Band. It will be held at Douglas Park from 6:30 to 8:00 P.M.. This will be Gene Haas's
last concert as director at Douglas Park after 38 seasons. There is no admission charge,
but donations will be accepted for the Wounded Warriors Project.
