A Snow Emergency has been declared for the City of Springfield to begin at 5:00 p.m. this
evening and lasting for 72 hours.
“We anticipate that weather conditions will deteriorate quickly over the next 24 hours, with
significant snowfall anticipated,” Edwards said.
“Because of the severity of this storm, vehicles along snow routes make it exceedingly
difficult for our crews to remove the snow and make streets fully passable. This will allow our
crews to work curb to curb and clear our city streets of snow.”
Under a Snow Emergency, parking is prohibited on all streets designated as Snow
Emergency Routes and where existing signs indicate
that parking is prohibited in the event of a snow
emergency. If vehicles are parked along those routes during the Snow Emergency, motorists face
the possibility that their vehicles will be removed and towed elsewhere. For the most part, motorists
are cooperating with the city in this effort.
Some downtown streets may be more congested as city crews use end loaders to load trucks
and remove the snow. Drivers are reminded to watch for snow removal crews so as to allow them
room to do their work.
Persons clearing private parking lots and sidewalks are reminded to not plow the snow into
the streets. It is a violation of city ordinance to do so, and makes for unsafe driving conditions.
