The Springfield Fire Department is dedicated to protecting lives and propertythrough emergency response, fire prevention, and public safety education.Serving the residents of Springfield and surrounding Fire Protection Districts, thedepartment responds to fires, medical emergencies, technical rescues, andhazardous material incidents. In addition to emergency services, the departmentenforces fire codes, conducts safety inspections, investigates fire causes, andeducates the community on fire prevention. Firefighters receive continuoustraining to maintain their skills and readiness, ensuring they can respondeffectively to any situation. The department also utilizes advanced technology tosupport emergency response efforts. With multiple fire stations strategicallylocated throughout the city, the Springfield Fire Department remains committedto delivering prompt and professional service to keep the community safe.

Divisions

Division Overview

The City of Springfield are well protected with a Fire Department equipped with staffing, emergency vehicles, response teams, and pre-incident plans to handle the risks that have been identified within our response area. We serve eight unincorporated areas in and around Springfield known as Fire Protection Districts.

Division I - Operations

The Operations Division oversees the emergency response services for all citizens who live in, work or visit the City of Springfield, Illinois.

Division II - Fire Safety

The Fire Safety Division of the Springfield Fire Department is focused on promoting a safe community for residents and visitors in the greater Springfield area.

Division III - Training

Training consists of Basic Firefighter, Technical Rescue Awareness, Fire Apparatus Engineer, Vehicle Machinery Operations, Hazardous Material Operation, Fire Service Emergency Vehicle Operator and Emergency Medical Technician.

Division IV - Tech Services

The Technical Services Division’s duty is to recommend, implement, and maintain electronic technology-based devices, software and systems used by the Fire Department.

Qualifications

  1. U.S. Citizen
  2. Not younger than 20 years of age at the time of written exam.
  3. Not older than 34 years of age at the time of written exam. Please see “Age Exemptions” in the informational packet.
  4. High school graduate or GED equivalent
  5. Ability to successfully pass the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) including Ladder Climb.
  6. No felony convictions
  7. Tattoo restrictions
  8. Vision correctable to 20/40 with no monochromatic color blindness.

  1. Probationary Firefighter -- 1st Year $57,239.60
  2. Probationary Firefighter -- 2nd Year $65,416.69
  3. Probationary Firefigter -- 3rd Year $73,593.77
  4. Firefighter $81,770.86
