Illinois Hotel

401 East Washington Street, Springfield, IL

The Illinois Hotel Building was constructed in 1903 on the site of the former Chenery House Hotel, where the Lincoln family once lived. The 71-room Illinois Hotel provided permanent and transient accommodations and was described in a 1912 promotional publication as having a “modern fine popular priced café” on the premises. The hotel operated until 1947 when it was converted to offices. The building’s distinctive, curved bay windows on the second and third floors were removed at that time. Subsequently the original glass storefronts and Classical Revival cornice were removed. Current storefronts reflect 1990s remodeling.
