Kirlin Building

107-111 South 7th Street, Springfield, IL

The Kirlin Building was constructed to take advantage of the expanding central business district. Built in 1889, this one story building located at 107-111 South 7th Street, has served as the location for numerous businesses over more than a century. Michael Kirlin purchased the site in 1886 and first used the building as Kirlin Dry Goods store. It is a masonry structure utilizing cast iron lintels and brick piers. This simple building is an example of common turn of the century commercial architecture. When Kirlin died in 1901, his son Bernard Kirlin leased the building to various businesses. Michael Kirlin went on to found many local enterprises including establishing Kirlin, Egan and Butler Funeral Home. The Kirlin Building’s small commercial structure was eventually divided into three separate spaces that have housed clothing stores, tailors, barbers, dry cleaners, a cigar shop and several taverns.
