The Communication Department at a City Municipality or Mayor's Office is responsible for managing all aspects of the city's public messaging and outreach. This includes overseeing the city's public access channels, ensuring that residents have access to vital information and updates through video broadcasts. The department handles city photography and videography, capturing key events, initiatives, and official communications.

Road Construction Updates


DIRKSEN PARKWAY WATER MAIN VALVE REPAIR SCHEDULED - 06/01/2026 - On Thursday, June 4, emergency water main valve repairs will temporarily interrupt water service to City Water, Light and Power customers located along the east side of S. Dirksen Parkway between Stevenson Drive and Executive Park Drive and also along Horizon Drive. The service interruption will begin around 8:30 a.m. and work is planned to be complete no later than 4:30 p.m. Work is weather dependent and will be rescheduled if necessary. Customers impacted received notice of the work scheduled. Water Dispatch at 217-789-2323 ext. 2 can assist customers with any questions and updates to the work status may be posted to CWLP’s social media on Facebook and X.

HYDRANT TESTING UNDERWAY - The Springfield Fire Department has begun hydrant testing to ensure all are operating efficiently for fire protection. Testing is ongoing Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. through August 7. Water can become discolored in service areas located in the vicinity of the testing. If discoloration occurs, residents may run cold water through the tap until the water turns clear. Clothes washing should be delayed until the tap water runs clear to avoid discoloration. In most instances, the water will clear in approximately five minutes.
For information on locations for hydrant testing, residents may call the Springfield Fire Department at 217.788.8474. CWLP customers may call Water Dispatch at 217.789.2323 ext. 2 if discoloration persists or for any other questions on water quality.

CLOSURE OF A PORTION OF NORTH 8th STREET, NORTH OF VETERANS PARKWAY - 05/28/2026 - The City of Springfield is advising motorists of a temporary full closure of a portion of N 8th Street, north of Veterans Parkway beginning Monday, June 1. The closure is expected to remain in place through Wednesday, June 3, weather permitting. During the closure, access between Veterans Parkway and N 8th Street will be fully restricted. Any access to the portion of N 8th Street, north of Veterans Parkway will need to be made from Camp Sangamo Road. Additional signage and detour information will be posted in the area to help direct traffic safely around the closure. Drivers are asked to use caution and follow all posted traffic control signage while work is being completed.

Guidelines to Posting on Community Events Calendar

The City of Springfield is proud to provide a community event calendar as a resource for the public. This calendar allows individuals and organizations to promote their community events and activities. To add an event to the calendar, please submit a request for approval by completing the "Request an Event to add to the Community Calendar". All required fields marked with an asterisk (*) must be completed and "submit" button clicked for form completion.

Approval is based on the following criteria:

  • All entries should be submitted no less than 10 business days prior to the date of the event/activity to ensure posting to the Community Calendar. If approved, the City of Springfield will do its best to post submitted items within 2-3 business days.
  • All events/activities must be open to the general public, not just to organization members, and must not discriminate on any legally impermissible basis.
  • Sporting events, religious services, political fundraisers and camps are not eligible for posting to the Community Calendar. Religious organizations hosting seasonal events such as fall festivals, job fairs, community events etc. may be considered.
  • Regularly occurring or ongoing events will not be included on the Community Events Calendar.
  • A community event calendar forms will need to be completed with all required information included.

Examples of events submitted to the City of Springfield community events calendar include:

  • Events open to the public, including community celebrations, farmers’ markets, school events, educational opportunities, local sporting events and other community activities.
  • Fundraiser events for non-profit agencies, schools, social services or other organizations.
  • Informational seminars, clinics or public meetings

Events submitted for posting containing any of the following shall not be approved for posting:

  • Profane language or content.
  • Event that promotes a specific religious or political activity or belief.
  • Sexual content or links to sexual content.
  • Content that promotes, fosters or perpetuates discrimination on a basis of race, creed color, age, religion, gender, marital status, status with regard to public assistance national origin, physical or mental disability or sexual orientation.
  • Direct solicitation of commerce (i.e. yard sales, special discount sales, etc.)
  • Conduct or encouragement of illegal activity.
  • Information that may tend to compromise the safety or security of the public or public systems.
  • Content that violates a legal ownership interest of any other party.
