About the Mayor of Springfield



Misty Buscher was elected Mayor of Springfield on April 4, 2023. She was sworn into office on May 5, 2023. Before being elected Mayor, she was the Springfield City Treasurer from 2015-2023. Prior to being the treasurer Misty spent twenty-five years working in the Springfield financial industry with her last financial position being Vice President of Marine Bank.

Misty is an active volunteer in her community. She is a distinguished Edgar Fellow and has served on the boards of various organizations, including the Springfield Area Home Builders, Capital Area Realtors, Friends of Memorial, Veterans Memorial Fund, and Kings Daughters Organization. Misty has devoted her time to volunteer with numerous community organizations, such as The Red Cross, Boys & Girls Club, SPARC, March of Dimes, Compass for Kids and Meals on Wheels.

The following are Boards and Commissions that are operated by the City of Springfield, in addition to committees that the Mayor may appoint an individual or individuals to on behalf of the City.

The City is proud to host and partner with numerous Boards and Commissions as a way for our residents to take part in issues and matters affecting our community. These positions are voluntary; positions are appointed by the Mayor; and to be eligible to participate, individuals must live in the city limits of Springfield.

If you would like to be considered for an appointment to any of the Boards or Commissions listed below, please email the Mayor’s Office below with your contact information, the Board or Commission you are interested in, and attach a copy of your resume. Openings may not be available at the time you apply. However, you will receive confirmation from the Mayor’s Office of receipt of your resume. Mayor's Awards for the Arts 2024

Nominations Now Open!

The City of Springfield in partnership with the Springfield Area Arts Council invites you to nominate an individual or business for a 2024 Mayor’s Award: Artfully You. These awards recognize outstanding talent in and dedication to the arts in Sangamon and Menard counties, the area served by the Springfield Area Arts Council. The eight award categories include Individual Visual Artist; Individual Performing Artist; Individual Literary Artist; Individual Visual Arts Organization; Arts Volunteer; Arts Educator; Arts Student; and Business Committed to the Arts.

Please complete the nomination form in its entirety and return it to the Springfield Area Arts Council, 420 South Sixth Street, Springfield, Illinois 62701, or as a PDF to director@springfieldartsco.org.

  • Nominations must be received no later than 5:00 p.m., Friday, October 11th, 2024.
  • There is no limit to the number of nominations that may be submitted. Use a separate form for each.
  • There is no charge to nominate.
  • Nominations can be submitted for previous nominees who have not been award recipients.

Self-nominations or nominations by family members are not allowed. Members of the selection committee, the Springfield Area Arts Council board of directors, staff, and their immediate families, as well as previous Mayor’s Awards for the Arts winners, are not eligible for nomination.

What Does It Take To Nominate?
  • Artistic Merit: Indicate the artistic medium (dance, theatre, music, visual arts, literary) of the nominee and describe the quality of the nominee’s work in the discipline. Please list awards or achievements on a third page.
  • Longevity of Service: How long has the nominee served Sangamon or Menard counties? In what capacity – volunteer, staff, board, educator, etc.? And with which organizations, schools, boards, festivals, et cetera has the nominee served?
  • Impact of Work: What impact has the work or service of the nominee had on the community?
  • Breadth of Work: What projects or causes have been served by the nominee’s involvement and how many people have been served through the work of the nominee?
  • Documentation: Letters of support, résumé, newspaper reviews, performance/exhibit programs, et cetera may be submitted but are not required. Three pieces maximum.

Mayor Misty Buscher, along with Bella Szabo, Executive Director of the Springfield Area Arts Council Board of Directors, will present the awards on Saturday, November 2nd, 2024, at the Inn at 835, at 2:00 pm. The public is invited to attend to celebrate the nominees.

A proclamation is an official document issued by the Mayor to designate a specific time period (day, week, or month) for the purpose of raising awareness or celebrating historic milestones. Proclamation requests must meet the following guidelines:

  • Requests must be from a non-profit group or organization, and contain a message of citywide significance to a broad group of the Springfield community.
  • Requests must be submitted using the electronic form below – phone, fax, email, or mail requests will not be honored.
  • Requests must be made at least 5 business days but no more than 90 days from the request date.
  • The Mayor's Office only fulfills requests within the City of Springfield organizations.
  • Please include 4-6 WHEREAS clauses and 1 THEREFORE clause to be used for proclamation; however, the Mayor’s office reserves the right to modify any proposed language.
  • Any statement regarding statistics must be confirmed by citing reference. Proclamation may be denied if references are not included. Reference statements should include language such as, “according to …”

Please note, proclamations are typically not provided for the following:

  • Anniversaries of individuals or businesses;
  • Specific individual achievements (note: individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to, Springfield, the state of Illinois or the United States will be given special consideration);
  • To honor private businesses, conferences, grand openings, fundraisers, or to act as a letter of support or endorsement of individual people, products, or services.

Application for the Mayor's Youth Council

The mission of the Mayor's Youth Council (MYC) is to provide a positive forum for Springfield area youth to do the following:

  • Promote diversity and inclusion among youth participants.
  • Advocate on issues and initiatives that impact young people's lives in Springfield, such as youth violence and bullying.
  • Act as a communication link between city government and youth in Springfield.
  • Develop leadership skills and introduce youth to civic engagement, activism, and community service (organizing city-wide community service events and public forums).
  • Educate youth on local government, city departments, local businesses, and those who work in philanthropic venues.

Students must be high school students currently enrolled in grades 9-12 during their participation year.

Each school will have 1-2 members, with returning members having priority. Returning students must notify their school of their interest in returning. Suppose there are changes in addresses, emails, and/or mobile phone numbers. In that case, students interested in returning for the following school year shall notify the Advisors/staff administrators of those changes. High School students who reside within the City of Springfield, Illinois, and also within Springfield


Aldermanic Wards 1-10 are eligible to participate. There are many pockets and unincorporated areas within the city limits.
