I acknowledge receipt of a Springfield Fire Department Home Knox box, which is being loaned to me as a part of the Home Safety Program. On this day a key was placed in the Knox Box that will aid firefighters in accessing my home to render aid. I agree to leave the Knox Box in the location it was installed so that it will remain visible to responding firefighters. It is my responsibility to notify the Fire Department any time I change the locks, and to provide them a new key to place in the box. It is also my responsibility to notify the Fire Department if and when the box is no longer needed. At that point the box will be picked up by the fire department and the key inside returned to the owner.

Division 1

Division 1 - Springfield Fire Department – Operations Division Overview

The Operations Division of the Springfield Fire Department is the core of the department’s emergency response capabilities. Under the leadership of the Division Chief of Operations, this division is responsible for supervising, directing, and evaluating all frontline activities related to fire suppression, emergency medical services (EMS), technical rescue operations, disaster response, and hazardous materials incident mitigation.

The Operations Division also plays a critical role in the development and implementation of operational procedures, particularly those that enhance fire prevention and control efforts for suppression personnel. Beyond emergency response, the division oversees key support functions including vehicle and building maintenance, equipment and hydrant testing and inspections, purchasing, and inventory control.

The Division Chief ensures that all operations personnel are prepared, equipped, and ready to respond effectively to any emergency while maintaining the highest standards of safety and professionalism. This division represents the largest and most visible component of the Springfield Fire Department and is essential in fulfilling the department’s mission to protect life, property, and the environment.

Division 2

Division 2 - Springfield Fire Department – Division of Fire Safety Overview

The Division of Fire Safety within the Springfield Fire Department is tasked with ensuring the safety of the community through proactive fire prevention, code enforcement, and investigative efforts. Led by the Division Chief of Fire Safety, this division oversees the Fire Prevention Bureau and the Arson Bureau, working to reduce the risk of fire-related incidents and safeguard lives and property throughout the city.

The Fire Prevention Bureau is responsible for the development, interpretation, and enforcement of fire safety codes and ordinances. This includes inspections of new and existing buildings, plan reviews for fire code compliance, and public education efforts aimed at increasing fire awareness and prevention across the community.

In parallel, the Arson Bureau—under the direction of the Division Chief—works in conjunction with law enforcement agencies to investigate the origin and cause of suspicious fires. These investigations are conducted in accordance with all applicable laws, codes, and ordinances, with the goal of identifying and prosecuting criminal acts related to arson.

Additionally, the Division of Fire Safety collaborates with City Water, Light & Power (CWLP) to ensure that the city maintains an adequate and reliable water supply for fire suppression operations.

Through comprehensive oversight of prevention, enforcement, investigation, and infrastructure coordination, the Division of Fire Safety plays a vital role in protecting the citizens of Springfield and enhancing the effectiveness of the department’s overall mission.

This commitment to innovation ensures that Springfield Fire Department personnel are equipped with the most current techniques and knowledge available in the fire service.
