Are you interested in learning about community law enforcement? This page contains information about the Springfield Police Department’s Citizen’s Police Academy.

The Citizen’s Police Academy (CPA) is a free, nine-week course comprised of both classroom and hands-on learning experiences. The 2019 CPA will take place every Wednesday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. beginning August 14, 2019 and ending October 9, 2019.

Individuals may also download and print a copy of the application by clicking the link in the Application Process section on this page. Paper applications can be mailed to or dropped off at the Springfield Police Department located at 800 E. Monroe in Springfield.

Information About the Citizen’s Police Academy


The Citizen’s Police Academy is NOW ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS.

The Citizen’s Police Academy is a revolutionary concept in law enforcement and police-community relations, consisting of orientation, classroom and hands-on instructional learning experiences. The goal of the CPA is to enhance the community policing concept and increase public awareness and education in our City. Subjects covered during the Academy include: officer selection and training process, the job of the uniformed patrol officer, tactical operations, investigation skills, vice and narcotics, communications, firearms, defensive tactics, crime prevention, community policing, and more.

Students will be actively involved in many interesting and unique activities, such as touring police facilities, using police equipment, firing the department service weapons, canine demonstrations, and other community law enforcement related activities. The course is free of charge, and each applicant must complete an application and agree to undergo a cursory background check prior to approval and admission. To graduate, each student must attend seven (7) of the nine (9) sessions.

The CPA is held at the Springfield Police Academy, located at 3501 Color Plant Road.

All applicants must agree to undergo a cursory background check prior to approval and admission.

Authority of Conduct Background Investigation

As an applicant to participate in the Springfield Citizen Police Academy, I hereby authorize the Springfield Police Department to conduct a criminal history background investigation. I understand that such background investigation is routine, required for admission, and is conducted due to the content of the classes given at the Academy.

I understand that all available police and criminal records will be checked and that resulting information will be used in determining eligibility of applicants for the Citizen Police Academy. All information is to remain confidential as required by Illinois and Federal statutes.
